The Spring Congress may decide:

Secure innovation, how to secure smart devices

Noting that:

·         Innovation is occurring at a fast and ever-increasing pace

·         Many devices have become smart and part of the so-called ‘internet of things’, including televisions, watches, toothbrushes, and cars

·         These devices have access to the internet in some way, and cybercriminals can thus gain access to these devices

·         No firewalls or other security measures are generally installed on these devices to keep hackers out

·         Vendors oftentimes do not update these devices after they have been sold, only offer updates for a very limited time, or only at additional cost or effort to the consumer

Considering that:

·         These devices are therefore vulnerable to cyberattacks

·         Consumers generally seem to be unaware of this fact

·         These devices often hold private information which can be stolen this way, and hacked can be used as gateways into other networks, or can be used in botnets

·         Hacking into devices such as cars can cause grave accidents to happen

·         Digital security should be just as much of a consideration in product safety as the various other aspects covered under European regulation

LYMEC calls

for the European Union to implement European product regulations to require vendors to update internet-connected devices for their expected economic lifetime and to take appropriate steps such as the installation of firewalls and the use of randomised default passwords to increase cybersecurity.

-for the European Union to avoid attempting to solve potential problems with slow and static regulations knowing the fact that technologies are improving rapidly.
-for the European Union to focus on the education of its citizens in order to increase the knowledge, as well as emphasize the fact that the regulation of the products would lead consumers to the greater risk of hacks since they would be buying a cheaper thus less secure device.
